Basic 10 Rules to Remember before Column Design

1. Choose Square Column, if the Compression force acts at the axis of the column section.

2. Choose the Rectangular column, if the compression force acts at the eccentric axis of the column section.

3. The ratio of Height to Width (Lowest of two sides) is less than or equal to 40.

[NOTE: For width greater than or equal to 200 mm]

4. The minimum number of main longitudinal reinforcement bars is 4 for the square shape column and 6 for the circular shape column.

5. The minimum dia of the Main longitudinal reinforcement bar is 12 mm.

6. Spacing between ties not greater than 100 mm for Zone-A, and not greater than 150 mm for Zone-B.

7. For rectangular and square columns, the Main longitudinal reinforcement bar should be along with four corners of the section.

8. Must maintain Nominal cover 40 mm. Unless specified otherwise, the actual concrete cover should not deviate from the required nominal cover by +10mm and -0 mm.

9. The bottom of the main longitudinal reinforcement bar must be duck legs to link with the foundation.

10. The minimum area of reinforcement percentage is 0.8% and the maximum is 6% of column cross-section.
