Here we are going to explore the derivation of the D2/162 formula, which is perhaps the first formula we should learn in the construction industry for steel weight calculation for Billing. We know it is used to compute the weight of steel bars at site. We also see the significance of Steel weight in estimation in the Bar Bending Schedule.
This derivation is very useful for Civil Engineers and Civil Supervisors. So let’s start the derivation for finding the Steel Weight Per Meter.
Derivation Of (D²/162) – Per Meter Steel Weight
Let’s assume a Steel Bar of Length 1 m (1000 mm) and the diameter of the Steel is ‘d’
We know, Weight = Volume X Density
To find out the weight of steel,
Weight of Steel per Meter = (Volume of Steel) x Density of Steel
Weight of Steel per Meter = (Area of Steel x Length of Steel) x Density of Steel
We know that,
- The Density of Steel is 7850 Kg/m3.
- Area of steel (circular shape) = πr2 or πD2/4
- Length of Steel assumed = 1m
So,
Weight of Steel per Meter = (Area of Steel x Length of Steel) x Density of Steel
= πD2/4 x 1 x 7850
When multiplying all values should have the same unit. Here diameter is in mm and the unit weight is in m3.
1 mm = 1/1000 m ; 1 mm2 = 1/(1000)2 mm2
= 3.14 x (D2 / 4) x 1/(1000)2 x 7850
= D2 x 6162.5 x 1/(1000)2
= D2 X (0.00616225)
= D2 X 1/(0.006162)-1
= D2/162.29
If you want to know the steel weight per foot. 1 metre = 3.281 ft. Just multiply the same.
Weight of Steel per Foot = D2/162.29 x 3.281 = D2 / 533
