A circular septic tank is a type of septic tank that has a cylindrical or round shape. It is designed to treat and store wastewater from residential or commercial buildings that are not connected to a centralized sewer system. The tank is typically made of concrete or fiberglass and is buried underground.
Advantage of Circular Septic Tank
Circular septic tanks offer several advantages over other shapes, including:
- Structural Integrity: The curved walls of a circular septic tank provide excellent structural integrity, making them resistant to external pressures. This helps to prevent collapse or damage to the tank over time.
- Efficient Use of Space: Circular tanks occupy less surface area compared to rectangular or square tanks of the same capacity. This can be beneficial when land availability is limited, allowing for more flexibility in installation.
- Self-Scouring Action: The circular shape promotes a self-scouring action within the tank. As wastewater enters the tank, the circular flow pattern helps to keep solids in suspension, allowing for better settling and separation of solids and liquids. This promotes more effective treatment and reduces the likelihood of solids accumulating at the bottom of the tank.
- Balanced Flow Distribution: Circular septic tanks typically have a central inlet and outlet configuration, which helps to distribute the wastewater evenly throughout the tank. This balanced flow distribution ensures that all parts of the tank receive equal treatment and prevents short-circuiting, where wastewater bypasses certain areas without sufficient treatment.
- Ease of Installation and Maintenance: Circular septic tanks are generally easier to install due to their shape and inherent strength. They can be transported and maneuvered more easily, and their rounded shape reduces the risk of damage during installation. Additionally, maintenance tasks such as pumping and inspection can be simpler due to the accessibility provided by the circular design.
- Longevity: Circular septic tanks are known for their durability and longevity. The curved walls and robust construction materials used in their fabrication contribute to their ability to withstand external loads and resist corrosion, extending their lifespan.
It’s important to note that the specific advantages of a circular septic tank may vary depending on the design, size, and materials used. Additionally, local regulations and site-specific factors should be considered when choosing a septic tank design. Consulting with professionals and adhering to local guidelines is crucial for ensuring the proper installation and functioning of the septic system.
In today’s post, I will teach you How to calculate the volume of a circular septic tank and will also tell you what should be the minimum diameter and minimum height of a circular septic tank according to the IS code 2470 Part-1. So let’s start | Circular Septic Tank Volume calculation.
From IS code 2470 part-1, we get the minimum diameter of the circular septic tank should be 1350 millimeter and its length should not be less than 1.3 meter (1 meter for Operating depth and 0.3 meter for Free Board). This is given in clause number 3.4.5.3 of IS code 2470 Part-1.
Circular Septic Tank Volume Calculation
Now we will calculate the volume of a Circular Septic tank. Watch the figure given below carefully.
From the figure, it is given that,
The diameter of Septic Tank = 1350 mm or we can say, 1.35 meter
∴ The radius of Circular septic tank (r) = 1.35/2 = 0.675 meter
Height of Septic Tank (h) = 1300 mm or we can say 1.3 meter
The volume of Circular septic tank = πr²h = 3.14 x 0.675 x 0.675 x 1.3 = 1.86 cum
The total volume of circular septic tank in liter = 1.86 x 1000 = 1860 litre.
So in this way you can calculate the volume of a circular septic tank.
