Basic Important Points to Remember Before RCC Wall Design as per IS 456 2000

Important Points to Remember Before RCC Wall Design: RCC walls play a crucial role in the structural integrity of buildings. However, to ensure their effectiveness and longevity, it is imperative to adhere to the guidelines laid out in IS 456:2000. Before delving into the specifics of RCC wall design, it’s essential to grasp the significance of IS 456:2000.

This standard serves as the backbone for structural design and construction in India, providing guidelines for the use of reinforced concrete in buildings and structures. Here are essential points to consider before embarking on RCC wall design.

Important Points to Remember Before RCC Wall Design

1. The minimum thickness of the wall should be 100 mm.

2. The ratio of Effective height to thickness shall not exceed 30.

3. The minimum ratio of vertical reinforcement to the gross concrete area shall,

a) 0.0012 for bars up to 16 mm

b) 0.0015 for bars above 16 mm

4. The minimum ratio of Horizontal reinforcement to the gross concrete area shall,

a) 0.0020 for bars up to 16 mm

b) 0.0055 for bars above 16 mm

5. Vertical reinforcement shall be spaced not farther apart than three times the wall thickness nor 450 mm.

6. Horizontal reinforcement shall be spaced not farther apart than three times the wall thickness nor 450 mm.

7. For wall having thickness more than 200 mm, the vertical and horizontal reinforcement shall be provided in two grids.
