IDENTIFICATION
AAC Block – It is Grey in colour.
Red Brick – It is Red in colour.
MAIN RAW MATERIALS
AAC Block – Main raw materials is Fly Ash which is a waste product from thermal power plants.
Red Brick – Natural Soil is used in the production of Red Bricks.
GREEN PRODUCT
AAC Block – AAC Blocks are made from a non-toxic material which is not harmful to the Natural Environment. During the manufacturing process of AAC Blocks, we can recycle the waste product again and again. Hence It is considered as a green product.
Red Bricks – Red Bricks are made from Natural Clay which is a big loss to the Natural Environment and it also reduces the top layer fertile soil which helps in the Cultivation of Crops. So it is an enemy of the Environment. Hence it is not a Green Product.

EARTHQUAKE RESISTANCE
AAC Block – AAC Blocks reduces a dead load of building so it is more stable than Red Brick and increases the safety against earthquake.
Red Brick – Compared to AAC Block, Red Brick Increases the Dead Load of the Structure. Hence it is less stable compared to AAC Block during the Earthquake.
FIRE RESISTANCE
AAC Block – As per PCA – Portland Cement Association, Fire Resistance of a 200 mm thick wall is up to 4 hours. (Actual Experimental Rating is up to 8 hours)
Red Bricks – Fire Resistance of a 200 mm thick red brick wall is up to 2 hours.
MOISTURE RESISTANCE
AAC Block – Water absorption of AAC Block is less compared to Red Brick. It is approximately 10%. Apart from that, It consists of unconnected micropores within it which prevent the transport of moisture from one phase to other. So Moisture Resistance of AAC Block is better than red brick.
Red Brick – Moisture Resistance of Red brick is less compared to AAC Block.
THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY
AAC Block – Transfer of heat through AAC Block is less, So the Thermal Conductivity Rate is low in AAC Block.
Red Brick – Thermal Conductivity is high hence heat transfers from brick is more than the AAC Block.

SOUND INSULATION
AAC Block – AAC Block provide sound insulation properties. It acts as a Soundproof barrier.
Red Brick – It does not possess Sound Insulation properties.
EFFLORESCENCE RATE
AAC Block – Efflorescence rate is low compared to Red Brick.
Red Brick – Efflorescence rate is high.
WATER ABSORPTION
AAC Block – It varies between 5 to 10 per cent, but it should not be more than 10%.
Red Brick – It varies between 10 to 20 per cent, but it should not be more than 20 %.
DRY DENSITY
AAC Block – It varies in between 451 – 1000 kg/m3
Red Brick – It varies in between 1600 – 1920 kg/m3
COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH
AAC Block – It varies in between 30 – 35 kg/cm2
Red Brick – It varies in between 30 – 35 N/mm2
WEIGHT
AAC Block – AAC Blocks are lighter in weight due to its dry density ratio that reduces the dead load on the structure. Hence we can save Steel up to 15% and concrete up to 7 % because AAC Block reduced the load on foundation due to its light self-weight a saves consumption of steel, hence reduces the structural cost.
Red Brick – Red Bricks are heavier in weight as compared to AAC Blocks with greater dry density.

LABOUR OUTPUT
AAC Block – Due to its big size, the speed of the work is fast. Hence Labour Output is High compared to Red brick.
Red Brick – The size of the red brick is small compared to AAC Block. Hence Labour Output is low compared to AAC Block.
MORTAR CONSUMPTION
AAC Block – Requires less mortar due to flat and even surface and less number of joints.
Red Brick – Requires more mortar due to flat and even surface and less number of joints.
TERMITE RESISTANCE
AAC Block – AAC Block is non-toxic in nature and also possess pest control qualities. It does not allow spreading of pests and termites and hence increase the life of the wall.
Red Brick – Red brick does not have any non-toxic or pest control characteristics.
SPEED RATE OF CONSTRUCTION
AAC Block – Speed of construction is fast as compared to Red Brick.
Red Brick – Speed of construction is slow compared to AAC Block.
CURING PERIOD
AAC Block – Less water required for curing compared to AAC Block.
Red Brick – More water required for curing hence high electricity bill and labour cost required.
WASTAGE
AAC Block – Wastage is very less compared to Red Brick (Almost negligible). Here, 100% utilization is possible.
Red Brick – Average 10 to 15 % breakage happens at the construction site so 100% utilization is not possible. Sometime wastage goes up to 30% for the poor quality of bricks.
ECONOMICAL
AAC Block – Use of AAC Block at the construction site is cheaper as compared to Red Bricks.
Red Brick – Use of AAC Block at the construction site is costlier as compared to Red Bricks.

Thank you for this article. I learned a lot. and based on my conclusion. AAC block is better that red bricks. I think if we gonna ask about the design and color. red brick sure will win this. But based on the overall aspect. I will choose the AAC block.
